CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The No. 3/3 Oklahoma wrestling team pushed its winning streak to four with a win over the No. 11/12 Cornell Big Red Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals held at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.
"It was a tough first round match," said head coach Jack Spates. "Cornell is a quality opponent. We were both banged up, but the bottom line is we better step it up if were going to do something in this tournament. We need to be more aggressive and wrestle harder which I think we will."
Teyon Ware came up big for the Sooners once again. The senior notched a fall in his 141-pound match against Matt Easter of Cornell. Ware dominated the match, which was short lived, and scored the fall in the first period at 1:29.
"Coach told me I needed to come out and get bonus points in my match, and I was able to get them," the senior said. "It came down to the heavyweight match and the bonus points were a big factor in us picking up the win."
Also notching up wins for the Sooners were Sam Hazewinkel (125), defeating Troy Nickerson by a decision of 2-0, Matt Storniolo (149), defeating Mike Reish by a decision of 3-0, Shane Vernon (157), defeating Curtis Roddy by a major decision of 12-3 and Jake Hager (HWT.), defeating Jim March b y a decision of 7-1.
Hager's match was the deciding match in the dual with the score 16-15 heading into the heavyweight match. The Senior from Perry, Okla., dominated the match from beginning to end and came away with a 7-1 victory.
"I wasn't really trying to focus on the dual. I wanted to focus on my opponent and make sure I went out there and took care of business," said senior Jake Hager. "I thought we wrestled tough. Cornell is a very good team and for us to beat them at the National Duals is no small feat."
The Sooners, the No. 3 seed, are set to face Central Michigan at 3 p.m., on Saturday in the second round. Complete brackets for the duals can be found at www.intermatwrestle.com.
Following this weekend’s action, the Sooners return to the mat when they play host to Fresno State and Cal Poly in a double dual on Saturday, Jan. 21.
